Description:
Join us for the opening of Herne Hill's Free Film Festival with Steamboat Bill Jr.
We launch the 2014 Herne Hill Free Film Festival on Friday May 2 from 8pm in Station Square, Railton Road with the Buster Keaton classic Steamboat Bill Jr (Dir Charles Reisner and Buster Keaton, 1928, USA, Cert U, 71 mins) with a live piano soundtrack performed by internationally renowned accompanist Neil Brand.
Our landlubber hero returns from college to work on his father’s Mississippi Riverboat with predictably hilarious consequences. And to make matters worse he’s head-over-heals in love with the daughter of dad’s arch rival. Featuring Keaton’s trademark daredevil stunts, it’s a film that’s influenced talents as diverse as The Goodies and Jackie Chan and is regarded as a masterpiece of the silent era. Watch out for the famous hurricane sequence in which the façade of a house collapses around Keaton leaving him unscathed – just!
Neil Brand – who draws on both his extensive knowledge of silent movies and wonderful talents as a musician to enhance our experience of the film – will accompany Steamboat Bill Jr on Herne Hill’s public piano. This is a FREE event. No tickets required.
This is an outdoor screening without seats so please bring your own chairs, rugs or cushions. And as it’s an open air event we advise you to dress for British Summer weather! Screening begins once it is dark – at approximately 8.45pm Station Square is well served by bars, restaurants and cafes and there will be stalls selling food.
